First CDM project registered in Singapore (26/12/2008)

Singapore acceded to the Kyoto Protocol on the 12th  April 2006 but has until now had no “Clean Development Mechanism” (CDM) projects registered.

This is now in the past following the registration of the  waste heat recovery project at Bee Joo Industries (a subsidiary of ecoWise, a waste management firm) that became Singapore’s first CDM project on 18th November 2008; officially the first CDM project in Singapore (ref. 1950).

Waste steam previously destroyed, is recovered to dry spent grain - resulting in the substitution of fossil fuel. The project is expected to generate approximately 16,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission reductions (16,000 Certified Emission Reductions or CERs) per year by avoiding the combustion of diesel oil.

“Being the first carbon company to register a CDM project in Singapore is an important milestone” says Michel Buron, CEO of KYOTO energy Pte Ltd, a Singapore based CDM project developer. “The carbon industry is still very immature and opaque resulting in a misalignment between quality and perceived brand name; there are lots of players who are talking in this business, but few are doing!
Achieving important milestones amongst others such as the registration of a project in a new CDM environment like Singapore strengthens our position in our home market and is the best manner to demonstrate our capabilities and to be recognized as a market leader in the region”.

Last November 2008, the Carbon Rating Agency recognized the high quality of KYOTOenergy's project by granting an A+ to the first CDM project registered in Singapore.
