Biogas project, Cargill Siam Borabo

General description of the project activity

The location of project is at Cargill Siam – Borabu plant, in Maha Sarakam, North eastern Thailand. The project activity consists of installing a sequential stage of wastewater treatment with methane recovery to an existing anaerobic lagoon system without methane recovery for the treatment of organic wastewater generated by an existing tapioca starch manufacturing plant. The biogas will be used mainly for electricity generation for onsite consumption that will displace grid electricity while the excess biogas will partly replace the bunker oil consumption of a starch dryer.
The project activity will reduce GHG emission by:
1. Avoidance of methane emission from anaerobic decomposition of wastewater from the open
lagoons treatment system.
2. Displacing carbon intensive grid electricity by onsite generation of renewable energy (using two
biogas gensets)
3. Partly substituting bunker oil by biogas for the starch drying
4. Combustion of excess methane in a flare
