Thermal energy production from renewable energy - Cargill, Villanueva (Honduras)

General description of the project activity

The project activity is to be located at Cargill Animal Nutrition feed production plant located in Bufalo, on Desvio al Calan in the industrial zone of the municipality of Villanueva in Honduras, approximately 400 km from the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa.
The purpose of the project is to replace three fossil fuel boilers with a single biomass boiler. The various biomass residues (mainly sawdust) that will eliminate the need to use approximately 1.3 million litres of bunker oil per year. Moreover, the burning of the biomass in the modern European boiler will eliminate the problems of contaminated emissions such as sulphur and CO2 associated with the combustion of bunker fuel, thus minimizing air pollution and contributing to the mitigation of climate change.
This project will not only contribute to the displacement of fossil fuel with biomass and to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions released from the self-decomposing wood waste, but will also benefit to the health and safety of its local community by avoiding fires and smell. Moreover, the project will create jobs with the requirement of additional workers for the new equipment and processes. A percentage of Cargill’s CDM income will be used in the improvement of health care services within the local community.
